Speech Evaluation
A speech evaluation is an assessment that determines your child's abilities in the areas of articulation, phonology, oral motor functioning, vocal quality, resonance and possibly even fluency. ASHA has some great information that talks further about evaluations for speech sound disorders. During an initial speech evaluation, I can come to your Portland area home or your child's Portland area school. I use a combination of formal, semi-formal and informal tasks to determine the child's speech abilities.
A formal assessment is an important measure to compare your child's speech with other peers their same age. Examples of formal assessments I use include the Goldman-Fristoe Test of Articulation 3 or the Articulation Station Test.
I use semi-formal tasks to determine how easily, if at all, your child can produce targeted speech sounds given modeling and cuing. During these tasks, I provide verbal, visual and tactile instructions on how to produce a specific speech sound and assess how well your child is able to mimic the sound production. This is known as stimulability.
Lastly, I use informal or play-based tasks to assess the characteristics of your child's articulation in conversational speech. This answers the question, "How do your child's speech errors impact their overall functional communication?" Speech evaluations may be conducted over 1-2 sessions depending on your child's stamina as well as the complexity of the situation. A comprehensive report of the results of the speech evaluation will be completed.
